Smile Biotech

The company

  • Spin-off of the University of Torino; established in 2009, it operates in the field of the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental ailments.
  • Smile Biotech is developing a method for measuring the soluble salivary protein CD14, which disappears with the progression of dental cavities (caries). A rapid and non invasive test for detecting salivary sCD14 may be a useful and economical tool for dental hygiene and the prevention of tooth decay.
  • One patent filed in 2005.
  • Selected publication: “Absence of soluble CD14 in saliva of young patients with dental caries”, Bergandi et al. (2007) Eur. J. Oral Sci., 115: 93-96

Current Status

  • The relevance of the salivary protein sCD14 has been validated.
  • Anti-CD14 antibodies have been selected to create an ELISA-based quantitative test.
  • sCD14 has been expressed in mammalian cells to optimize the definitive ELISA test.
